Located at 9 Irvine Street, in the restful coastal village of Peterborough, situated at the mouth of the Curdies River on the Great Ocean Road, Great Ocean House is the perfect destination for large family groups wishing to spend time together without living in each other’s pockets.
There is a reason why The Great Ocean Road is one of the world’s most scenic coastal drives and destinations. The landscape surrounding Peterborough is breathtaking. The property is only a short fifteen-minute drive to the magnificent 12 Apostles and is positioned between the Port Campbell National Park and the Bay of Islands Coastal Park. It is moments from many other favourite sites on the Great Ocean Road including London Bridge, The Arch, Loch Ard Gorge and The Bay of Islands.
There are ample opportunities for adventure for the young and young-at-heart. The town itself has a fantastic range of activities suitable for a large and diverse family group. There is an excellent playground for younger children, tennis courts, a recreation reserve and wonderful swimming at the main beach and numerous sheltered coves. There is a nine-hole links golf course with coastal cliff-top location and dramatic views. There is surf fishing on the front beach, two boat launch ramps in town and plenty of locations for a relaxed spot of line fishing. There are also numerous coastal walks.
In the surrounding area you can visit the glow-worms at Melba Gully, follow the Foodies Trail or take a trip to Tower Hill for a close encounter with some of our native fauna! You can take a scenic helicopter ride, pick some delicious strawberries or simply sit in front of the fire and enjoy a good book or board game.
Great Ocean House
The refurbishment of Great Ocean House was completed mid-2013. It was previously the Peterborough Motel and sits on arguably one of the best sites on The Great Ocean Road. In the main building there is a large, open living and dining area in what was once the old restaurant. It has a wood-fire burner as well as gas heating and the most wonderful views down the main beach. The large kitchen is fully equipped and we have installed a new wide-fit Smeg Oven perfect for cooking up a delicious family roast. There is a separate television room in this building with a large screen television and DVD & BluRay player and an undercover play area viewable from the kitchen, perfect for keeping the children entertained during inclement weather. There is a separate wall-mounted flat screen television in the meeting/entertainment room for those who want to enjoy watching their sport!
Each bedroom is separately keyed and has been completely refurbished. There are two generous family suites and an additional 8 rooms. The sleeping configuration of the rooms is flexible so please review our floor plan and advise if any changes are required.
There is parking for 12 cars and a secure bike shed that can hold up to 10 bikes.
The garden is secure and well maintained, perfect for a game of cricket or croquet.
Although amazing in summer some of our guests believe that the colder months offer the opportunity to view this famous coastline at its most impressive – view our off-peak rates here.
We have made sure that Great Ocean House complies with regulations relating to disabled access and have fitted out one of our rooms as a full-disability room with ramps, wet-room bathroom with shower seat and disabled toilet facilities. We have widened doorways to ensure there is disabled access into all the main living areas and have included a disabled toilet within the main building.
